|Venad| Street Children - Who is responsible?

After getting the Oscar award for Slumdog Millionaire, lot of discussion is going on in the Media. Some facts also came out to the public. Which is really shaking the human beings. The following is the English translation of an article published in Etemaad Urdu Daily Newspaper of Hyderabad. It is not the translation of the whole article. Only main points I translated.

 

  • More than 45,000 children missing in a year. Out of which no clues of 11,000 children at all..
  • As per civil society organization only 10% cases of missing children has been registered in the Police.
  • As per the survey of an non government organization, the majority of missing children are girls from age of 12 – 19 years.
  • 80% of missing girls belongs to Slum areas.
  • As per the National Crime Records Bureau, 3500 children missing until June 2008 and out of them 2294 children's age between 12 – 18 years.
  • According to NDTV reports 12000 kids were missing alone in Delhi for the past 20 years of which in 2005, 7058 kids were missing.
  • Chandigarh is the second place with 5.8%.
  • According to Times of India, 4500 kids were missing from Bangalore during the past two years.
  • In 2006, 913 girls and 551 boys of age below 20 years of age were missing in Kerela.
  • 33% of street children are in the age group of 6 – 10 years. 40% are in the age group of 11 – 15 years, 27% are in the age of 16 & above.
  • Most of them escapes from their home and living under the sky. Due to this situation they are suffering from T.B., Hepatitis, Malaria, Typhoid and other dangerous diseases.
  • Smoking and drinking are the habits of these street children.
  • They are surviving themselves by collecting and selling plastics, waste papers, bottles and other scrap metals.
  • Sometimes they are involving in the thefts.
